Why Attorneys Need Fingerprinting

State bars, courts, and employers require fingerprint-based background checks before you can practice or join a firm.

The Texas Board of Law Examiners Requirement

The Texas Board of Law Examiners (TBLE) requires a fingerprint-based criminal history record check as part of the character and fitness review. This applies to the Declaration of Intention to Study Law, the full bar application, and admission by out-of-state transfer. Your prints are checked against both the Texas DPS criminal history database and national FBI records.

Out-of-State Admission, Pro Hac Vice & Law Firm Employment

State bars outside Texas often require their own fingerprint cards or an FBI Identity History Summary. Pro hac vice appearances and federal court admissions can trigger additional checks. Law firms, corporate legal departments, and government employers also run fingerprint-based background screening on new hires. We have completed cards for attorneys heading to Florida, California, New York, Ohio, Maryland, and many other states.

Attorney Fingerprinting FAQs

Direct answers about fingerprinting for bar admission and law firms in Dallas-Fort Worth.

Do attorneys need fingerprints for the Texas bar?

Yes. The Texas Board of Law Examiners requires a fingerprint-based criminal background check as part of the character and fitness review. This applies to the Declaration of Intention to Study Law, the bar application, and out-of-state admission. Your fingerprints are checked against both Texas DPS and FBI records.

What fingerprint card do attorneys need?

Most Texas Board of Law Examiners applicants submit fingerprints according to the board's instructions. Many attorneys also need FBI FD-258 cards for out-of-state bar admission, pro hac vice, law firm or federal employment, and security clearances. Tell us which bar or firm you are applying to and we complete the correct card.

How much does attorney fingerprinting cost?

$85 per person for mobile service, or $105 per person at our Irving office, and includes 2 completed cards with professional FBI-spec ink. Additional cards are $20 each. FBI Identity History Summary checks run $150 at checkout. Travel fees and a 4% processing fee apply to mobile appointments.

Can you come to my law firm or office?

Yes. Our professional mobile technicians come to your law firm, home, or office anywhere in the DFW metroplex, including evenings and weekends. Same-day appointments are often available, which matters when a filing or admission deadline is approaching.

I'm applying to a bar in another state. Can you help?

Yes, and this is a common attorney request. We handle FD-258 cards, state-specific fingerprint card formats, and FBI Identity History Summary checks through VetConnex, an FBI-approved channeler, all completed from Texas. This includes pro hac vice and federal court admission filings.

Do you fingerprint whole law firms?

Absolutely. We regularly serve groups of 5 or more for law firms, corporate legal departments, and contract attorney cohorts, with group rates available. We come to your office and process multiple people efficiently while keeping every card to FBI quality standards.

What should I bring to my appointment?

Bring a valid government-issued photo ID and any forms your bar, firm, or employer provided, including pre-printed cards if they mailed them to you. We supply the FD-258 cards, professional FBI-spec ink, and everything else needed.

How long does the appointment take?

The appointment takes 15-20 minutes. You leave with your completed cards in hand the same day, ready to submit to your bar, firm, or employer. For FBI Identity History Summary checks, results come from the FBI after processing.

How is your service different from walk-in fingerprint centers?

Walk-in centers require you to travel, wait in line, and take time away from your practice. We provide personalized mobile service at your law firm, home, or office, with no waiting. Our professional technicians take the time to ensure clean, readable prints, and we also provide ink-card services that kiosks do not offer.
